NOTE: please check out the information contained in my reblog of this post— this original post isn't actually completely correct, as the data was misrepresented on Wookiepedia! Thanks!
sometimes i think about the fact that public support for the military creation act was at 70% around when palpatine took emergency powers. 70% of the republic wanted the senate to raise an army and fight the separatists. that's fucking wack. (for reference, 12%-17% of americans actually wanted america to join world war 2 in 1940. 17%-24% in 1941(pre pearl harbor).)

Sheev was the consummate politician. The sith victory was entirely political for many decades and sadly that's why it worked so well. The populace and the senate, many quadrillions of ordinary citizens, wanted the war. They believed in and supported Palpatine in his rise to power. They voted him supreme executive powers again and again. What is 10,000 mystical space wizard monks going to do in the face of that amount of popular support? The Jaws of the trap were closing on them long before they realised it was a trap at all. Heads I win, tails you lose. That's what dealing with the sith is like.
